Nairobi City Launches Smart Street Lighting Project in Kenya

Posted on : Monday , 2nd February 2026

In an effort to fully enlighten the city while enhancing safety and service delivery, Nairobi City County recently announced plans for introducing smart street lighting in collaboration with the National Government. They are introducing LED lighting to outdated lights to cut down on carbon emissions and electricity use.

The county is going to fill this gap by adding additional intelligent street lights so that every area is adequately lit. The existing street illumination will also be re calibrated and integrated into the new smart system to support ongoing surveillance, timely defect identification, and timely repairs.

Ibrahim Auma Nyangoya, a member of the County Executive's Committee for Mobility and Works, addressed at the Mobility and Communications Sector Annual Meeting and emphasized the benefits of street lighting for the city.

Proper street illumination serves an essential part in strengthening security for the public, encouraging night-time business, and improving accessibility. We are guaranteeing effectiveness, transparency, and a safer, brighter Nairobi for everybody through our collaboration with the National Government and the implementation of smart technology, he stated.

The goal of this significant urban infrastructure project is to fix street lighting. In order to enhance safety, service delivery, and the development of smart cities, the effort, spearheaded by Governor Johnson Sakaja in collaboration with the National Government, would update lighting with LED luminaries, connected infrastructure monitoring, and real-time defect detection.
